Where in the World? MU ITC Alumni Spotlight: Ben Scheiber

With a passion for service and a desire to explore, Ben Scheiber is living his dreams working as a Peace Corps community economic development volunteer in rural Costa Rica. He served as a student intern with the MU ITC during the Fall 2022 semester. He graduated from the Trulaske College of Business in May 2023 with a BS BA with an emphasis in management. Putting himself out there and drinking from a firehose of new things, Scheiber shares encouragement: “When you find yourself in a new environment, do your best to seek out opportunities and say yes as much as possible to speed up the integration process.”

Hometown: Batavia, Illinois

 Post-MU graduation:  Ben Scheiber served as a student intern with the MU ITC during the Fall 2022 semester. He graduated from the MU Trulaske College of Business in May 2023 with a BS BA with an emphasis in management.  

Current status: Scheiber is currently working as a Peace Corps community economic development volunteer in Costa Rica. He is working and living with community members in La Fortuna to guide conversations supporting the development of goals that can better support growth and sustainability in the community.

Favorite feature about living abroad: “The novelty in all aspects of life abroad is what I enjoy the most. Living abroad comes with novel struggles, but it also comes with novel opportunities to see new landmarks, make new friends and learn more insights about languages and cultures. The tradeoff is well worth it to me. I feel particularly blessed to have spent the first 10 weeks of my time in this country living with a local family. Esperanza, my host mom, welcomed me to the country and made me feel comfortable right away. I feel extremely blessed to have stayed with her family,” he said.

 Something he misses from home: “One thing I will always miss about America is the variety of food you can find in stores and in restaurants thanks to the diversity of people in the country.”  

Words of advice for MU ITC Interns or graduating students: “When you find yourself in a new environment, do your best to seek out opportunities and say yes as much as possible to speed up the integration process.”
