University of Missouri senior Samie Chitwood is channeling her love for fashion into building Blossoms Boutique LLC, a thriving startup focused on creating unique, affordable styles for women. Her entrepreneurial spirit embodies the experience-centered learning opportunities provided by the Robert J. Trulaske, Sr. College of Business, allowing her to gain real-world experience while earning her degree.

In December, Chitwood graduates from Mizzou with a degree in business, emphasis in marketing. She will also earn a minor in textile and apparel management from the College of Arts and Science.

What began as a creative idea for the third-generation Tiger has already transformed into an online retail business — all while she was a Mizzou student. Now, after Chitwood graduates, her business is blossoming into something bigger: a brick-and-mortar storefront in Belle, Missouri, a small town just 25 miles from her hometown of St. James. This new chapter of Chitwood’s journey is driven by her desire to give back to the region that shaped her while being surrounded by family and friends along the way.

Read on for a Q&A with Chitwood about her Mizzou experience.

Why did you choose Mizzou?

I bleed black and gold! I’m proud to be the third generation in my family to attend this incredible university. Growing up, I spent countless weekends at Mizzou homecomings, soaking in the spirit and tradition that make this place so special. My siblings are also here, so it feels like home in every sense. The strong family connection and the vibrant campus community made it an easy choice for me. Mizzou has always been a part of my story, and I couldn’t imagine going anywhere else.

How did you take advantage of hands-on learning opportunities on campus?

I took full advantage of the hands-on learning opportunities at Mizzou by focusing my coursework and projects on real-world applications, particularly around Blossoms Boutique LLC. My professors were incredibly supportive, encouraging me to use classwork to refine my ideas and giving feedback that helped me improve. These projects were more than just assignments; they became a foundation for my business. Additionally, I engaged in collaborative learning through group projects, networking events and workshops that expanded my skills and professional connections.

How has Mizzou helped you achieve your goals?

Mizzou provided not only a solid academic foundation but also hands-on opportunities to apply what I learned directly to my business. Personally, I would like to thank faculty members Joel Poor, Stacie Kane, Brady Hodges and Katie Essing in the Robert J. Trulaske, Sr. College of Business for their incredible support. They all offered me valuable guidance and insights that shaped both my academic journey and my entrepreneurial path. Many of my class projects were centered around my business, giving me the chance to develop marketing strategies, analyze industry trends and refine my business model with expert feedback.

What’s your favorite Mizzou memory?

My favorite Mizzou memory is running to my sorority, Pi Beta Phi, on bid day. At the time I had no idea that it would become my home away from home and the place where I’d meet my best friends.

Why are you proud to be a Tiger?

I’m proud to be a Tiger because Mizzou represents tradition, community and opportunity. As a third-generation Tiger, I feel deeply connected to the university’s legacy and the pride it inspires. Mizzou has given me so much — from the friendships I’ve made and the memories I’ll cherish forever to the education and experiences that helped me build my business.

What would you tell someone who’s interested in coming to Mizzou?

If you’re thinking about coming to Mizzou, I’d say go for it — you won’t regret it. Mizzou is more than just a university; it’s a community full of tradition, opportunities and incredible people. Whether you’re interested in academics, campus involvement or finding lifelong friends, there’s something here for everyone.

The hands-on learning opportunities and supportive professors will help you grow in ways you can’t imagine. Plus, the campus spirit and pride are unmatched — there’s nothing quite like spending a fall Saturday at Faurot Field or experiencing the excitement of Homecoming.
