About Our Certificate

The Global Business Certificate empowers students with knowledge and skills to function effectively in an increasingly global business environment and better position themselves for success. Students who complete the global business certificate will acquire global business knowledge and experience that will enhance their undergraduate learning with practical international business skills, regardless of their undergraduate major or career ambitions. The certificate will prepare students for an exciting career in Global Business through real-world coursework and hands-on learning experiences. 

Students who finish the 12 credit-hour curriculum with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA will receive the Certificate in Global Business upon completion of their bachelor's degree.

Reviews the essential business functions within a global economy and provides a basic literacy in international business strategy and decision-making. Core concepts in global management, global marketing, global supply chain, and international finance will be discussed.

MANGMT 3910: MANAGING ACROSS CULTURES or MANGMT 3920: MANAGING PEOPLE IN THE GLOBAL

MANGMT 3910:

Improves understanding of culture in a practical, actionable business context. Prepares individuals for interpersonal interaction and engagement with business counterparts in a cross-cultural setting.

MANGMT 3920: 

Focuses on the management of people in global organizations. Highlights differences in recruitment and selection, training and development, leadership and motivation, compensation, cross-cultural negotiation, and employment relations for companies conducting business internationally.

**STUDENTS CANNOT USE BOTH MANGMT 3910 AND MANGMT 3920 TOWARDS THE 6 CREDIT HOURS ELECTIVE REQUIREMENT FOR THE GLOBAL BUSINESS CERTIFICATE - CAN ONLY APPLY ONE (3 CREDIT HOURS), THEN MUST PICK A DIFFERENT COURSE FROM THE ELECTIVE OPTIONS.

MANGMT 4080: MANAGING GLOBAL TRADE

Investigates issues in managing global trade, the implementation of international strategy, the coordination of global supply chains, and the oversight of trade finance to support a business’s global expansion activities.

MRKTNG 4720: GLOBAL MARKETING

Examines effective marketing strategies for firms operating in the global environment. Provides key insights into the economic, political/legal, and cultural challenges that can affect a business’s global marketing operations. Introduces methods and tools for evaluating foreign markets.

FINANC 4720: INTERNATIONAL FINANCE

Explores the adaptation and application of domestic corporate finance in international business. Provides insight into international capital budgeting, working capital management, foreign exchange risk management, and international capital markets.

This interdepartmental course focuses on the impact of technological change and globalization on cultures around the world. Exploration of the topic incorporates various interdisciplinary perspectives.

Students must complete three credit hours of a supervised internship that consists of:

  • A minimum of 120 hours on-the-job experience AND

    • This course focuses on applied marketing principles for international business and provides students with skills development and hands-on experience in the creation of a strategic marketing plan to enter a global market.

*Offered in the Spring, Summer, and Fall semesters.

Note: If a business student has already completed BUS_AD 4500 with an internship that does not meet the international trade-related requirement of this certificate program, that individual would be advised to register for 3 credit hours under MANGMT 4940/MRKTNG 4940/FINANC 4940/ACCTCY 4940 for an internship that would qualify. If you are not a student in the College of Business, that student would be advised to enroll in MANGMT 4940.

INTERNSHIPS WITH THE MU INTERNATIONAL TRADE CENTER OR TRULASKE STUDY ABROAD MEET THE INTERNSHIP REQUIREMENTS.

***The internship course must be taken at the same time as your internship. If you completed an internship but did not take an internship course simultaneously, it will not be approved for the certificate. 

1. Please declare the certificate by clicking the "Apply Now" button on this page. This will ensure the Global Business Certificate gets added to your academic plan in myZou. Please allow up to seven business days for this to be processed. 

  • Once their declaration has been processed, students will receive a follow-up email that contains important information regarding requirements to complete the certificate. 

2. As soon as you secure an internship, please send us an email with the following information:

  • The job description needs to include the specific international trade job functions, the name of the company, and dates of the internship. The job description needs to be written by the company.
  • If you do not have an official offer letter, we accept an official email from the company/supervisor confirming that you were offered the internship.
  • List which internship course you completed or will be completing simultaneously. 

3. Internships will be evaluated and approved by the program director. Once a decision has been made, you will receive a follow-up email regarding your approval status for your internship. 

**Business students will also need to go through a separate internship approval process for BUS AD 4500. If you are a non-business student wanting to take MANGMT 4940 as your internship course, please send us an email.
