Trulaske students offer a warm ‘Summer Welcome’ to new students

Mizzou’s Summer Welcome is a rite of passage for new students at the University of Missouri. Summer Welcome Leaders are often the first members of the Mizzou community that new students meet when arriving on campus. These influential leaders help empower new students by sharing their first-hand knowledge on the campus and its programs. This summer, eight students from Trulaske’s College of Business will lend their expertise to support students through the Summer Welcome Program.

My favorite Mizzou tradition:
My favorite Mizzou tradition is the Midnight Barbecue during Welcome Week. For me, it was an experience like no other to be out late at night, hanging out with new friends and getting to know many more people. The event was set up party-style where the mood was relaxed and everyone was having fun. It was also definitely fun for me, being a person who had a strict curfew and wasn’t allowed to go to parties.

What advice do you have for incoming Mizzou students?
Go to the games! Even if you aren’t a sports fan, I would still highly recommend it to any incoming student. Nothing will compare to my first Mizzou football game and the lively environment that is so unreal, it felt like a lucid dream. Along with that memory, I will never forget about when we beat KU and stormed the court after the game (even though the SEC fines Mizzou $100,000+ for it: oops). I guess if you’re wanting “real” advice, make sure you introduce yourself to your professors. Become familiar with them so that they can act as a resource (you never know when you are going to need extra help). M I Z!

My favorite spot on campus:
My favorite spot on campus is the Marching Mizzou practice field. I have played the trumpet for nine years and have been in marching band for six years, so I feel completely at home in a band environment. Many of my closest friends at Mizzou are in band, making it a place where I am surrounded by people I love while doing what I love.

What advice do you have for incoming Mizzou students?
I recommend that all incoming Mizzou students join three clubs/organizations: one related to their major, one based on a hobby, and one that pushes them out of their comfort zone. College is all about self-discovery and trying new things. The best part about joining a club is that you are not locked in, and you can always explore new opportunities and find what truly interests you!

My favorite Mizzou tradition:
Tiger Walk followed by Concert on the Quad! I love me some tiger stripe ice cream and then being part of Marching Mizzou, Concert on the Quad is definitely a highlight of the season!

What surprised you about Mizzou’s campus:
The most surprising thing is how small campus feels at times. With over 24,000 students, I never would’ve expected to see so many friends and acquaintances in my everyday campus life. It really helps to build a sense of community and comfort.

My favorite Mizzou tradition:
My favorite Mizzou tradition was running through the columns. It signified the start of me being here at Mizzou.

What I’m most excited for at Summer Welcome:
Definitely student groups. I want to get the students excited for Mizzou!

What advice do you have for incoming Mizzou students?
Do not worry if you come to Mizzou and don’t at first have friends. Get involved whether that be fraternity or sororities chapter, clubs, or on campus jobs. You will find your people.

What advice do you have for incoming Mizzou students?
Don’t stress it. You will rock once you get to Mizzou and don’t be scared to get involved with anything. Everyone is open to anyone.

What advice do you have for incoming Mizzou students?
For the first two weeks, step out of your comfort zone completely and make some new friends. This will make your transition to college much easier and more fun.

The lighting of the Jesse Hall Dome after a big win.

What I’m most excited for at Summer Welcome:
Spending the summer in Como with an amazing group of leaders and

once-in-a-lifetime experience I will never forget.

What I’m most excited for at Summer Welcome:
Getting to meet with new incoming students becoming a role model for them. Help show them around campus and have a great first semester at MIZZOU!
