The Great Resignation is an ongoing economic trend, primarily in the United States, in which employees have voluntarily resigned from their jobs en masse. Possible causes include wage stagnation amid rising cost of living, long-lasting job dissatisfaction, safety concerns of the COVID-19 pandemic and overall uncertainty during a period of unprecedented change. Some economists have described the Great Resignation as akin to a general strike.

Our guest, Dr. Anthony Klotz, an associate professor of management at the Mays Business School at Texas A&M University, will address questions such as: What is the Great Resignation and what are its causes? Is it measurable? Is there a Great Rehire approaching? And what can leaders do today to prepare for the future of work?

Despite advances for women in the workplace, the World Economic Forum estimates that closing the gender gap will take another 135 years -- meaning that there is still a great deal of progress to be made toward overcoming systemic barriers that limit the ability of women to be successful in the workplace. This panel will discuss what gender bias is, how it impacts women in the workplace, and how leaders can implement changes to their company culture that will help minimize the obstacles to equal opportunity for any individual. Panelists will not only share insights drawn from their careers about addressing gender bias, but will also share their thoughts about how addressing gender bias can improve performance and other important outcomes at work.

Why Entrepreneurs, Not Bureaucrats, Drive Innovation

drawing on insights from the Austrian school of economics

Recent years have seen a renewed interest in what Mariana Mazzucato calls the “Entrepreneurial State,” the notion that breakthrough innovations come not from competition among profit-seeking entrepreneurs and companies but from government programs. This panel looks at the nature of innovation in an entrepreneurial market economy and the role of government planners, funders and regulators in promoting or hindering the technological progress that drives advances in societal well-being. Panelists will draw on insights from the “Austrian” school of economics, which emphasizes the role of entrepreneurs, markets and prices in driving economic improvement.

National economic systems lie along a spectrum, often combining aspects of more than one system to reflect the societies in which they exist. In the United States, the mix includes characteristics of both capitalism and socialism. For more than 100 years, we have considered and debated our nation’s ideal place on this spectrum.

In the ninth event in the Trulaske Business Insider Series, six panelists will bring to bear their areas of expertise on this issue. Our discussion will include professors of history and agricultural and applied economics, including an expert in Austrian economics; radio talk show hosts; and students from both the MU College of Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources and the Missouri School of Journalism.

Capitalism and Socialism: A Discussion of the Ideal Mix for the United States will continue the Trulaske College of Business’ commitment to the respectful exchange of views that is fundamental to educating business leaders of the future.

In response to the popularity of our December webinar, Stormy Weather: Managing Organizational Climate, we are pleased to welcome back panelists from University of Missouri Health Care, Emerson Electric, Bayer Corporation and MasterCard for a second session focused on organizational climate.

Research suggests a strong correlation between organizational culture and climate and the ability of organizations to implement evidence-based practices and to improve business outcomes. Businesses are often challenged with organizational change, which might stem from mergers and acquisitions, organic growth, new technology and innovations, or hyper-competition. Given the additional challenges of a pandemic, economic downturn, social unrest, and remote work, managing culture and climate becomes even more difficult.

The latest webinar in the Trulaske Business Insider series will examine:

  • The differences between organizational culture and organizational climate
  • The challenges organizations face when leading the culture while managing the climate
  • The best practices for leveraging culture and climate to improve business results
