The topic for Symposium 2018 is “Innovations in Public Utility Business Models & Financing for the 21st Century”. The Symposium will be structured around three panels featuring a variety of speakers from industry, state commissions, consumer advocates, consulting firms, and academics.
Panel I: The Nature & Economics of Public Utility Business Models will examine the economics underlying existing business models and how such models might evolve in the future. Included in this discussion will be issues such as the current state of rate of return design, the challenge of distributed resources, fuel diversity, estimating the cost of capital, incorporating affordability and access, and possible innovations and adjustments in utility revenue capture models.
Panel II: Regulatory Practice & Innovation in Utility Business Modeling will focus on the regulatory component of utility business modeling. Speakers on this panel will discuss state innovations in pricing, federal and state mandates, consumer sentiment, and the regulatory response to market disrupters.
Panel III: Investors, Utilities & the Capital Markets will introduce the subject of utility financing and valuation. It will discuss the view from Wall Street regarding capital access by utilities, an assessment of industry capital needs, and the issue of industry valuation, profitability and earnings growth.
