Thomas W. Dougherty

Professor Emeritus

Thomas W. Dougherty is a member of the Academy of Management, the American Psychological Association and the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology. He has also been affiliated with the headquarters Personnel Research group at ExxonMobil. He held the Hibbs/Brown Chair of Business and Economics at MU from its inception in 2003 until his transition to Emeritus status in 2015.  His numerous teaching awards include the Kemper Fellowship for Excellence in Teaching, the Governor's Award for Excellence in Teaching and the MU Faculty/Alumni Award. He also received the UM System President's Award for Mentoring. Professor Dougherty has taught human resource management as a visiting professor in the People's Republic of China, Hong Kong and Romania. He also taught in MU’s Summer Program in Derry, Northern Ireland. His recent research focuses on mentoring and networking processes and their role in employee career success. His work has been published in journals such as Academy of Management JournalAcademy of Management ReviewJournal of Applied PsychologyOrganizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, and Personnel Psychology. His book Human Resource Strategy: A Behavioral Perspective for the General Manager (with G. Dreher) was published by Irwin/McGraw-Hill.
