On November 3, Joseph D. Hegger joined the Trulaske College of Business at the University of Missouri as director of the Jeffrey E. Smith Institute of Real Estate. He succeeds Sam Goldman who resigned the position last May.

"Joe's leadership experience along with his knowledge of the real estate business and his ability to interface with members of the professional real estate community will serve him well as director of the Smith Institute," said Dan French, chair of the college's Department of Finance.

Hegger was employed by the commercial real estate firm of Colliers Turley Martin Tucker of St. Louis since 1990. He most recently served as a principal and senior vice president and supervised the firm’s Corporate Operations Group. In addition, Hegger was responsible for the operation of the Real Estate Management Services Group, the largest third-party provider of management services in the Central United States.

Hegger currently serves on the Board of Directors for YMCA of Metropolitan St. Louis as well as the St. Louis Minority Business Council. He previously served as president of the Building Owners and Managers Association of St. Louis.

As director, Hegger will oversee the Smith Institute’s annual real estate forum. In addition, he will arrange and coordinate student internships with real estate firms, teach real estate courses, work with the faculty to further develop the college’s real estate emphasis area, and interact with real estate professionals.

"I consider myself very fortunate to have been presented this opportunity, and I look forward to this new chapter in my life. This move is a natural progression given my real estate experience, long-standing involvement with the college, and desire to further contribute to education," said Hegger.

Hegger received his BS BA degree from MU, and he has maintained strong ties to the college by serving on the Crosby MBA Program Advisory Board and previously on the college's Strategic Planning Team. He and his wife, Stacey, who is also an MU graduate, are members of the college's Davenport Society.

About the Jeffrey E. Smith Institute of Real Estate

Founded in 2005, the Smith Institute of Real Estate operates within the Department of Finance of the Robert J. Trulaske, Sr. College of Business. Its mission is to provide educational opportunities in real estate to students of the college and to members of the professional real estate community. The Institute enhances the real estate curriculum by providing instructional support in the area of real estate, coordinating student internships with commercial real estate firms, and providing opportunities for visiting real estate executives to interface with students. The annual national-level real estate Forum is hosted by the Trulaske College of Business and sponsored by the JES Holdings, LLC. This event highlights the Institute’s commitment to MU students by bringing in nationally recognized professionals in real estate to speak and meet with students. Keynote speakers have included Sam Zell and Warren Buffett. The Forum also provides students with the opportunity to meet and interact with the many real estate executives. The next Forum will take place Thursday April 2, 2009, in Reynolds Alumni Center on MU campus.
