Jake Halliday is the project leader for MU's initiative to establish a new business incubator. According to Jake, key elements of a successful incubator are that it (1) be advanced jointly with the business community of the area and (2) be viewed as a teaching and research laboratory integrated with entrepreneurship programs. Given Jake's perspectives about the incubator, he is interested in being involved with the college's educational activities in the area of entrepreneurship. Consequently, Jake has been given a courtesy appointment in our college as an adjunct assistant professor of management. Jake has a PhD in plant sciences and served for 10 years as president and CEO of ABC Labs here in Columbia. Jake founded and until recently served as chair of the Life Sciences Business Coalition for the Columbia area. Currently, he is president of the board of the Missouri Innovation Center.

Billie Cunningham has been promoted to adjunct associate professor of accountancy. This well-deserved promotion is effective September 1. Billie has been a member of the college's faculty since fall 1994. During her 10 years at MU, she has taught introduction to accounting to literally thousands of students. The quality of her teaching and her dedication to students have earned both college and campus-level awards for her. Billie has made, and continues to make, other important contributions to the college, the School of Accountancy, and the accounting profession. She has conducted numerous workshops around the country on strategies for incorporating writing, creativity, and critical thinking in accounting classes. Billie has served as chair of both the Teaching and Curriculum Section and the Two-Year College Section of the American Accounting Association, and on numerous Federation of Schools of Accountancy committees. In addition, Billie is the chair of the American Institute of CPAs' Core Competency Best Practices Task Force. Billie is the co-author (with Loren Nikolai) of a college-level text, Accounting: Information for Business Decisions. She has also published articles in a variety of journals and serves on the editorial review board of Issues in Accounting.

Tim Waid, adjunct instructor for management, is teaching business skills and leadership training to manufacturing professionals around the state of Missouri as part of a Department of Labor Technical Skills Training Grant Program. The program is designed to raise the level of skill of incumbent and displaced workers in the field of advanced manufacturing. This program will last through January 2007 with 300 manufacturing professionals receiving specialized training.

On August 27, Dean Bruce Walker was one of six judges for the first annual Kansas City Future of Business Awards competition. This new program is co-sponsored by UMB Bank, Deloitte, and Ingram's magazine. The panel of judges reviewed applications from 22 business firms and then selected 8 winners. The award winners will be announced at a luncheon this fall.

Throughout the summer, Todd Chiles, Dan Greening, Doug Moesel, and Bruce Walker have worked with 18 faculty members from five other MU academic divisions to prepare a proposal for entrepreneurship research funding from the Kauffman Foundation in Kansas City. Dr. Walker has been serving as the coordinator for the Interdisciplinary Entrepreneurship Research Group. The group will submit the final proposal, covering three distinct research streams, by mid-September.

Jere Francis was appointed to the following national committees of the American Accounting Association: Chair, Doctoral Consortium Committee (2005-06); Chair, Nominating Committee for Outstanding Accounting Educator Award (2004-05). He was also the invited Plenary Speaker at the 2004 Symposium on China Accounting and Finance Research in Hong Kong in June.
