Vita

William J. Carner, Ph.D. was Director of the Business Foundations Program and a Senior Lecturer in the Marketing Department in the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin before coming to Columbia in 2007.  In addition to the University of Texas, Dr. Carner has taught marketing at the University of Missouri-Columbia, St. Edward's University, and Southwest Missouri State University.  He also taught bank management at the University of Missouri.  In addition, he has been on the faculty of bankers’ schools for the Independent Bankers Association, Missouri Banker's Association, the Community Banker's Association of Pennsylvania and served as the Assistant Director for the Graduate School for Texas Savings and Community Bankers at the University of Texas.
 
He is president and founder of the bank consulting firm Carner & Associates, Ltd., which published the Bancpen Reports <sup>TM</sup> utilized by over 2500 financial institutions nationwide.  The Bancpen Reports were sold to Sheshunoff Information Services, Inc., a division of Thomson Publishing.  The company currently provides market research, cross-selling and sales management consulting to major corporations nationwide (major clients include FundsXpress, Inc.; Ineto; Wells Fargo; rateGenius; R.L. Polk Bank Services Division; and Motorola).  He is the author of three additional books for Thomson Publishing, TheCommunity Bank Marketing Manual, Internet Bank Management, and Internet Banking: Strategies, Tools, & Best Practices.
 
Prior to starting Carner & Associates, Dr. Carner held marketing management positions with Centerre Bancorporation, St. Louis; Commerce Bank, Springfield (MO); and First Tennessee Bancorporation, Memphis.  He has also served in loan positions at First Tennessee and in branch management with Bank of America, NTSA.  He has over 25 years of experience in the financial services industry.
 
Originally from Springfield, Missouri, he received his undergraduate degree from Drury College, his MBA in finance and Ph.D. in marketing from the University of Missouri-Columbia.  He has also completed the Graduate School of Banking and the BMA Graduate School of Bank Marketing both at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Graduate School of Thrift Marketing at the University of Virginia.  Dr. Carner's articles and analysis have appeared in such publications as The Wall Street Journal, the Journal of Retail Banking, Bank News, and Bank Marketing Magazine.  He and his wife, Dorothy (Head Librarian at the Journalism School), have two children, Kimberly, a prosecuting attorney in Kansas City, MO, and John, a news producer in Washington, DC.
