Doug Moesel recently had a coauthored publication titled "Using Knowledge Champions to Facilitate Knowledge Work" published with Nory Jones and Richard Herschel in the Journal of Knowledge Management.
Shaoming Zou and Er Fang published an article with Charles R. Taylor titled “MNC Control over Foreign Market Ventures: Do Host Governments Still Play a Major Role?” in Advances in International Marketing.
Marketing doctoral student Jason Garrett and Shaoming Zou presented a paper, “International Advertising: A Review of the Empirical Research from 1990 to 2002,” with Charles R. Taylor at the 2003 American Marketing Association Summer Educators’ Conference in Chicago. Shaoming and Jason also served as the session chair and discussant, respectively, of a session on “Measurement Issues and Methodological Approaches in Global Marketing” at the conference.
Todd Chiles presented a paper, co-authored with Rico Lam, titled "The Dynamics of Organizational Diversity in Evolving Forms" at the 63rd annual meeting of the Academy of Management in Seattle.
Ken Shaw and Donald Byard (CUNY-Baruch) had an article published in the Journal of Accounting Auditing and Finance titled "Corporate Disclosure Quality and Properties of Analysts' Information Environment."

David West authored a paper titled "Three Financial Strategies," which was recently published in the Journal of Health Care Finance.
Jere Francis, Inder Khurana, and Raynolde Pereira published a paper titled "The Role of Accounting and Auditing in Corporate Governance and the Development of Financial Markets Around the World" in the Asia-Pacific Journal of Accounting & Economics. Jere also presented two papers at the 2003 annual meeting of the American Accounting Association, and was reappointed to the editorial board of The Accounting Review.
Elaine Mauldin made an invited presentation titled "SAP in the Accounting Curriculum" to the AIS Educators Conference in June and presented a paper titled "Antecedents of the Market Demand for Assurance Services: A Model for Analysis with Applications in B2B E-Commerce" at the American Accounting Association annual meeting in August.
Xuejing Xing, doctoral graduate, and John Howe had an article published in the International Review of Financial Analysis titled "The Empirical Relationship Between Risk and Return: Evidence from the UK Stock Market."
Mark Houston had a paper “The Impact of Voice and Justification on Students’ Perceptions of Instructor Fairness,” published in the Journal of Marketing Education. Coauthors are Tom Schmidt (Simpson College), Lance Bettencourt (Indiana University), and Paul Boughton (Saint Louis University).

Summer Welcome

Jeff Wiese reported that Summer Welcome 2003 was a great success for the College of Business! Undergraduate advising saw 1021 new students, (148 transfer students and 873 freshmen) an increase of 144 more students over summer 2002. Several faculty members assisted the advisors by giving a "Faculty member's point of view" during orientation.

News from Grad Studies

Ph.D. orientation - New College of Business doctoral students met with faculty, staff, and fellow doctoral students on August 18. After welcoming remarks and a program overview, new students had lunch with representatives from their respective departments. The afternoon sessions included a student panel discussion of issues associated with life as a Ph.D. student. The orientation concluded with a picnic on August 24, at Bethel Park. Welcome to new doctoral students Xiumin Tina Xu and Dong Michael Yu (Accountancy); Michael Finke, Brett Olsen, and Maria Schutte (Finance); Yu-Hsien Sharon Wu (Management); and Chenjie Fred Miao and Scott Radford (Marketing).
Ph.D. in Business Administration graduates - Congratulations to the following graduates, with their new positions in parentheses: May 2003 graduates include Finance - Michael Sleight (Boeing Company) and Xuejing Xing (UM-Rolla). August 2003 graduates include Finance - Scott Beyer (Northern Illinois University) and Gisung Moon (Berry College), Management - James Mattingly (University of Northern Iowa), and Marketing - M. Omar Shehryar (LSU).
Crosby MBA entering class of 2003 – An outstanding group of students entered the Crosby MBA Program during 2003. The average GMAT score was 620 and the grade point average was 3.33. Total enrollment is now just over 200.
Orientation - The thirteenth annual MBA Orientation was held on August 18-22 for students enrolling in summer or fall 2003. The new 5-day format included for the first time a set of academic modules in marketing, finance, and statistics to prepare students for increased rigor in the foundation courses. Other sessions included an introduction to the new Integrated Case Plan, opportunities to meet and hear from faculty members, and social activities. A business panel of MBA alumni including Chris McNutt from Yellow Freight, Rock Schaller from Sprint, and Jamie Breshears from Deloitte & Touche offered tips to the new students for using their time in the program to prepare for the career search.
GMAC Conference – Robyn Ridgway and Barbara Schneider attended the Graduate Management Admissions Council annual conference in Dallas on June 18-21. Through session presentations and networking with MBA programs from all over the world, they learned about trends in admissions, student services, MBA curricula and career services. Rushworth Kidder, author of the recent book, How Good People Make Tough Choices: Resolving the Dilemmas of Ethical Living, addressed the meaning and importance of ethics in a talk. Follow-up discussion focused on the need to teach and discuss ethics throughout MBA course work.
Study Abroad in Asolo, Italy - MU is one of 32 members of the Consortium of Universities for International Business Studies. The Summer International MBA Program is offered through CIMBA, the Consortium’s graduate school of business in Europe. Fourteen, current Crosby MBA students participated in the Summer International MBA Program this past summer in Asolo, Italy. MU was the most represented school of all those that participated during this session. Each of the students completed six hours of graduate-level business courses while experiencing the cultures of the European countries.

MBA May and August Graduates - The Crosby MBA Program hosted a banquet on May 2 to honor 64 students graduating in May and August. Stacia Deming,MBA Association president, shared some entertaining thoughts about each of the graduates and Dr. Suzanne Ortega, dean of the Graduate School, was present to congratulate each of them.

Faculty Award – The John A. Riggs, Jr., Excellence in MBA Teaching Award was presented to Gregory J. Scott, J.D. at the Crosby MBA Graduation Banquet in May. Greg, known for his enthusiastic teaching style and dedication to students, teaches Business Law and Organization Ethics. He is a second-time recipient, having received the first Riggs Award given in 2000.
MBA Association - The MBA Association is a student organization focused on providing opportunities for increased professional awareness through guest speakers, networking, business- related field trips, community service, and social enrichment. The MBA Association has always proven to be an ideal way for students of many different cultures to share and learn from one another.

Congratulations to the members of the Mizzou Phi Beta Lambda chapter who participated in the National Leadership Conference in Dallas. The conference was attended by eight members who had qualified for competitive events through their excellent placement in the state competition.
Three PBL members placed in individual competitions. Jason Mueller placed 2nd in Nation in Economics & 2nd in Nation in Insurance Operations. Herman Eckerle placed 7th in Nation in

Economics. Bryan Black placed 2nd in Nation in Telecom & Recognition for Who's Who in PBL.
The Parliamentary Procedure Team of Zac Maggi and Rachel Parker was 5th in the nation. The Business Plan Team of Nora Lewis and Kristin Kaiman received 7th place. The entire Mizzou PBL chapter received 5th place for the American Enterprise Project, which teaches business skills in local schools. They also received the prestigious Gold Seal Chapter Award.

News from Development Office

The college has made significant progress in the rebuilding of staff in the development office. Tom O'Neal joined the college as executive director for advancement. Tom has a broad-based corporate background (Procter & Gamble; Pet, Inc.; and D'Arcy Advertising) and financial-development experience involving charities and sports tournaments.
Tom will oversee and actively participate in the college's financial development endeavors and other advancement activities. A high priority of Tom's is to provide leadership for the college's participation in MU's For All We Call Mizzou capital campaign.

Al Eberhard joined the advancement team as development director. For the past two years, Al has worked on behalf of University Development's regional programs. This position is funded by University Development as part of the capital campaign.
Lynn Hubert joined the development office as development director. Lynn was an undergraduate at MU and is currently a candidate for her MU EdD. She has over 14 years of work in the advancement field and has done fundraising at other institutions of higher education. Her most recent position was director of development for the College of Engineering at Utah State University.

even Awarded Citations of Merit at 2003 Honors Luncheon

The college’s highest honor, the Alumni Citation of Merit, is presented to a select group of alumni annually. In addition, deserving individuals who did not graduate from the College of Business may be recognized with a Special Citation of Merit.
Citation recipients are selected by a vote of the entire College of Business faculty. This award is based on career accomplishments, active involvement with the college through advisory board membership, recruiting activities or other collaborative programs, and financial support of the college. About 165 alumni and friends of the college have received Citations since this recognition program was established in 1957.

Staff and Student Accomplishments

James E. Mattingly, a doctoral student in management, successfully defended his dissertation in late June. Its title is "Stakeholder Salience, Structural Development, and Firm Performance: Structural and Performance Correlates of Socio-Political Stakeholder Management Strategies." Shortly after his defense, Jim moved to Cedar Falls, Iowa to begin his new position as assistant professor of strategic management at the University of Northern Iowa.
A number of staff members were honored at the Staff Recognition Luncheon in May. Lisa Eimers was presented with a 10-Year Service Award, Sondi Rippeto was recognized a 15-Year Service Award and Karen Shelton was presented a 20-Year Service Award.

Two staff members were chosen to receive an Outstanding Staff Service Award based on nominations and a committee screening. Ron Howren, programmer analyst expert, and Barbara Schneider, coordinator of recruiting and admissions, were selected for this high honor.
Karen Shelton, director of Career Services, was a panelist for a presentation on best practices for "Developing Successful Partnerships-Career Services and Employers" at the Midwest Association of Colleges and Employers in Minneapolis. The panelists were career services professionals from Michigan State University, University of Illinois, and St. Louis University.

New Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Programs

Mary Beth Marrs accepted an offer to serve as the college’s assistant dean for undergraduate programs. Mary Beth, who is an adjunct assistant professor of management, began her new duties on July 16.
As assistant dean, Mary Beth’s primary responsibilities will be to coordinate the BSBA program (including undergraduate advising); oversee course scheduling in the college; implement the enrollment management model for the BSBA program; serve as the college’s representative to MU’s enrollment-management planning initiative and the campus-level undergraduate deans group; and serve on relevant college committees.
Mary Beth has excellent academic and professional credentials, including being a three-time MU degree recipient. She has an undergraduate degree in industrial engineering, an MBA degree, and a PhD degree with a concentration in management. Mary Beth was a member of the business faculty at Idaho State University prior to joining the College of Business as a visiting professor in 2000.
|
Mary Beth’s teaching interests include operations management, organizational behavior, and organizational change. During her time at MU, she has been involved with Freshman Interest Groups, the Vasey Academy, the World of Business Stakeholder Group, the Alpha Kappa Psi professional business fraternity, and the Department of Management Advisory Board. Mary Beth was named Faculty Member of the Year by College of Business students in 2002 and 2003 and is a recipient of the Excellence in Education Award at the campus level.
Mary Beth’s research interests include the effects of aggressive and deviant behavior in the workplace. Her work has been quoted in such publications as Workwise magazine and USA Today. Prior to beginning graduate school, Mary Beth was a director of operations support for the U.S. Postal Service. She has been a consultant to various businesses and state agencies.

Business Breakfasts - The Missouri Training Institute has begun hosting a series of business breakfasts on behalf of the College of Business. The breakfasts provide the opportunity for departments within the College to present information on their current services and activities to local business leaders. Four such events were conducted during the last academic year and the most recent, held on July 17, attracted nearly 70 people. Dewey Thompson of MTI presented information on motivation and change.
Business Seminars - MTI completed its Summer Business Seminar series on July 29. Topics ranged from customer service to generational differences to lessons in leadership.

Ann Merrifield, assistant director of MTI, conducted four workshops at the Garden State Employment and Training Conference, held in Atlantic City, NJ. Sessions she conducted were: "Building an Innovative Workplace", "Communicating to Building Commitment", "FISH! Philosophy - Putting Play into the 'Workplayce'", and "Career Development - Working with Adults." There were approximately 700 workforce development professionals from New Jersey in attendance.
David Adams, project director for the Missouri Training Institute, has been appointed to the Board of Directors for the Ronald McDonald House. Every year the Ronald McDonald House acts as a home-away-from-home for between 800 and 900 families of hospitalized children. Since opening in 1983, the house has hosted over 16,000 families.

Big XII Deans Meeting

|
The Big XII Business Deans Meeting took place in Columbia this year. Business deans from Kansas State University, University of Kansas, Iowa State University, Oklahoma State University, Baylor University Texas Tech University, University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Texas A&M University as well as Bruce Walker attended the meeting. Some of the topics discussed were protecting university-provided funds and securing added private funds, faculty recruitment and retention, faculty composition issues, trends in curricula and courses, and a roundtable discussion of sharing successes.
