FAB Member Spotlight: Susan Smith

Susan Smith, graduate from the University of Missouri with a degree in finance in 1981, is enjoying her second year on the Finance Advisory Board.  She joined the FAB to become more involved with the University and informed of developments within the College of Business and Department of Finance.

Susan, a Columbia native, decided to return home for college after her family moved to Manhattan, Kansas during high school.  After graduation, Susan worked for Principal in Des Moines, Iowa before moving to Kansas City where she worked in various positions within the commercial real estate finance industry and took classes towards her MBA at UMKC, which she completed in 1998.  For the past several years, she has been involved with securitization of commercial real estate mortgages.  This market has changed significantly over the past two years.  Minimal securitizable mortgages are being made and no new deals are being initiated.  Susan provides valuation advisory services on commercial real estate assets to a CMBS Special Servicer, Centerline Capital Group, through her company, Susan M. Smith Advisory Services, LLC.
In addition to being involved with the University through FAB and the Jefferson Club, Susan is a member of the Appraisal Institute and KC CREW (Kansas City Commercial Real Estate Women).  Moreover, she is currently the Past President of the Kansas City CCIM chapter.  She enjoys coming to Columbia to watch the Tigers play at Faurot Field and spending time with her husband and two sons.  Her eldest son, Ben, is a junior Political Science major at UMKC, and her youngest son, Nick, is a freshman and Discovery Fellow at Mizzou this year.
