Alan "Ace" Greenberg Bio

Alan "Ace" Greenberg is the chairman of the executive committee of The Bear Stearns Companies, Inc. Previously, he was the firm’s CEO and chairman of the board. Bear Stearns is one of the largest global investment banks and brokerage firms in the world, with more than 15,000 employees and 2006 revenues of over $16 billion.

After graduating from the MU College of Business in 1949, Mr. Greenberg began his career on Wall Street as a clerk at Bear Stearns, where he has remained for 58 years. He demonstrated remarkable trading skills in the arbitrage department, and was running the department by age 25. In 1958, Mr. Greenberg was named a general partner with Bear Stearns, and, in 1978, he was appointed CEO. Bear Stearns became a publicly traded company in 1985, and he was named chairman at that time. Mr. Greenberg relinquished his position as CEO in 1993 and retired as chairman in 2001, but he remains chairman of the executive committee and continues to work at the firm.

For decades, Mr. Greenberg has been generous in his support of numerous causes and organizations. For his alma mater, he established scholarships for MU students and endowed another scholarship for students studying finance.

Mr. Greenberg has two grown children, and currently resides in New York City with his wife, Kathryn.
