Dear Consortium participant,

As dean of the Robert J. Trulaske, Sr. College of Business at the University of Missouri (MU), I want to welcome you to the 2008 AMA Sheth Foundation Doctoral Consortium. We are honored and delighted that this significant academic event is being held at MU, with most of the sessions occurring in our college’s home, Harry and Ann Cornell Hall.

I am confident that the Consortium will provide numerous opportunities for both experienced and new marketing scholars from universities around the world to interact with and learn from each other. I believe you will find it to be an enlightening, motivating experience. My confidence – indeed, my optimism – about the benefits of this event is based on two factors:

  • Several decades ago, I had the great honor and good fortune of attending the American Marketing Association Doctoral Consortium. This experience was both humbling and motivating for me. I heard presentations from and, perhaps even more important, talked informally with many marketing thought leaders who were on the Consortium faculty – Bud LaLonde, Alan Andreasen, Ralph Day, Steve Greyser, John Howard, and Phil Kotler, to mention several. I also had the opportunity to get to know the consortium fellows, many of whom I continued to interact with professionally over many years, especially with regards to AMA activities. The group of fellows included Ben Cocanougher, Vithala Rao, Fred Reynolds, Alan Sawyer, Ben Shapiro, and my future Arizona State University colleague and long-time friend, Steve Brown.

  • The co-chairs for this year’s Consortium – Murali Mantrala, Ratti Ratneshwar, and Lisa Scheer – have designed a program that will disseminate information, facilitate interaction, and spark insight in order to foster the development of this year’s Consortium fellows into first-rate marketing scholars. An array of innovative presentations will provide insight regarding emerging paradigms and significant topics in marketing. In addition, there will be many opportunities for Consortium fellows and faculty members to interact so that they can explore and bridge diverse research and teaching perspectives.

To the 2008 fellows, congratulations on being selected to participate in the Doctoral Consortium. To the faculty members, both those from other universities and my MU colleagues who have worked diligently on the Consortium, thank you for contributing to the intellectual and professional development of the future thought leaders in the marketing discipline. Once again, welcome to Mizzou!

Best regards,

Bruce J. Walker Signature
