Frequently Asked Questions

Can I take summer classes at another accredited college or university?

If you are planning to take a course at another accredited college or university during the summer, you should have that course approved in advance by your advisor by completing a Course Substitution Form. If you are taking a course at an institution in Missouri, you can get an idea of the MU equivalency through the course equivalencies link. If you are planning to take a course at an institution outside Missouri, you will need to attach a course description from the institution's catalog or web site to the course substitution form. You can take up to 64 hours at a community college. The residency requirement says that all students must complete 30 of their last 36 hours prior to graduation in residence at MU.

What is the difference between dropping a class and withdrawing from a class?

Dropping a course can be done by using myZou, telephone, or going to 130 Jesse Hall before the sixth week of the semester, and there will be no notation of enrollment for that course on the transcript. Withdrawing from a course can occur no later than two-thirds of the way into the semester, and a notation of W or F will appear on your transcript. Withdrawing from a course requires signature of instructor stating the grade of the student (W or F), and the advisor's and dean's signature on an add/drop form. If the grade is F, it is counted as an F in the term grade point average. The add/drop form is taken to 130 Jesse Hall.

When can I register?

Consult your advisor to find out the dates for the registration period for the next semester. Within that period, you are assigned a time for registration based on the number of credit hours you have completed. Your registration date/time is sent to you by email or you can check it on myZou.

Where is the Dean's office?

The Undergraduate Advising Center, 111 Cornell Hall, is the dean's office for the College of Business undergraduate students.

Is my registration time the same time I have an appointment with my advisor?

No, it is not the same. Your registration date and time is when you can register for classes by using myZou or telephone registration. An advising appointment is made by the student, preferably prior to your registration date and time.

Is English 1000 Writing Intensive?

English 1000 is considered the foundational Writing Intensive (WI) course, which everyone at MU must complete with at least a C-. Beyond English 1000, all students must complete at least two courses designated WI. One of these must be in the student's major. Both WI courses also require grades of at least C-. Students cannot get WI credit for a course until after English 1000 is completed; i.e., you cannot take English 1000 and a WI course concurrently and get WI credit for the other course.

How do I get into a class that's closed?

Contact the appropriate department and/or course instructor about getting a permission number. Permission numbers are granted at the discretion of the department and/or instructor. It is their prerogative to decline to give a permission number, so you should contact the department directly to ask about a permission number. Advisors cannot give permission numbers. If you can't get a permission number, you can watch for seats to open during Add/Drop by checking myZou periodically.

What is a humanity/science/elective?

These courses are called General Program Requirements. Examples of what courses fall into each of these categories in the College of Business are below.

How many electives do I need?

Your needed number of electives will fluctuate depending on some of your other course selections and on which emphasis area you eventually choose. You will need a minimum of 12 hours of electives to graduate, except in International Business where you only need 5 hours, and in Accountancy. Before you take courses that will give you more than 12 hours of electives, consult your advisor.
