How It Works
Seminar is a class in the MBA curriculum, but its activities are related to your non-academic professional development. This will help you understand how it works.
Students receive points for participation and attendance
- Grades are based on accumulation of points
- There are always many more opportunities for points than you need for grades!
- You can check Blackboard to see your accumulated points
What is the format?
- Professional decorum is expected at all speaker events
- Appropriate dress is expected and the dress code is included in all event announcements
- Casual – typical of attire worn to regular classes
- Business Casual – neat slacks, skirts, collared shirts or similar for women - no jeans, sneakers or shower flip-flops
- Professional – suits, sport coats, ties and comparable wear for women
- Please refrain from using laptops, eating, and wearing hats or inappropriately casual footwear when visitors are in class.
- Be Prepared! The MBA Association provides background information on speakers, and we expect all students to come to presentations prepared to listen, and to ask challenging and insightful questions to spark the conversation!
Who can attend?
- Speaker events on Tuesday or Thursday at 3:30 are open to all MBA students
- Some speaker events are open to all College of Business students and faculty
- Students not enrolled in Seminar are always welcome to attend
- Some events have limited capacity and require sign-up beforehand
- Directions for these sign-ups will be in the weekly MBA newsletter
- Sign-ups for Career Services events are in the BCS office – 104 Cornell
- Other sign-ups are in the MBA office – 213 Cornell
- All events require you to sign-in to record your presence!
- Watch for the clipboards with sign-in sheets attached
- If you have to leave before the end of an event, let Dr. Christy know before hand
- If the event is elsewhere on campus or in Columbia, MBA students should create their own sign-in sheet and pass it to all MBA’s in attendance!
See the MBA Seminar course syllabus and the weekly MBA online newsletter for more details and scheduled events.
