Admission

Undergraduate Level

Information on students who are admitted to MU and who indicate an interest in becoming accountancy or business majors is subsequently forwarded to the Undergraduate Programs Office of the College of Business (111 Cornell Hall, 573-882-7073). Qualified applicants with less than 54 semester hours of college courses completed will be admitted to the lower (pre-professional) level of the College of Business. Applicants with more than 54 semester hours of college credit may be admitted to a specific upper (professional) level College of Business program, e.g., the 150-Hour Accountancy Program, if they meet the program's admission requirements. Students who transfer into the College of Business' upper or lower levels from another MU school or college must submit a Transfer of Division form in order to be considered for admission.

The combined BSAcc/MAcc (150-hour) program is open to qualified undergraduate students at MU as well as qualified undergraduates who transfer to MU from other colleges and universities. Interested students not already admitted to MU should complete an "Application for Undergraduate Admission" form and send it along with the required application fee to the Director of Admissions, 130 Jesse Hall, University of Missouri-Columbia, Columbia, MO 65211. Any required transcripts or other documentation should be sent to the same address.

Undergraduate admittance to the 150-hour professional accountancy program requires completion of a minimum of 54 semester hours of college credit with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA for all course work attempted at all colleges or universities attended. Moreover, the course work completed must include the following pre-accountancy courses (or equivalent):

Acct 2036 (or Acct 2136H), Accounting I;
Acct 2037 (or Acct 2137H), Accounting II;
Econ 1014 or 1024 Microeconomics and Econ 1015 Macroeconomics OR,
Econ 1051H (Honors Macroeconomics and Microeconomics);
English 1000, Exposition and Argumentation;
Math 1300, Finite Mathematics;
Math 1320, Elements of Calculus; and
Stat 2500, Introduction to Probability and Statistics I.

Rapid growth in recent years in accountancy enrollment relative to instructional resources
has triggered a need to implement enrollment limits, as provided for in the Undergraduate Catalog.   Accordingly, to apply for the 150-Hour Program in Accountancy, at a minimum a student must have a: 

• 3.0 cumulative overall GPA,
• 3.0 GPA in each of Acct 2036/Acct 2136H and Acct 2037/Acct 2137H, and a
• 3.0 average GPA over the set of specified pre-accountancy courses identified in the Undergraduate Catalog, as listed above.

Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.  Admission decisions are made in the spring for fall admissions only. Admission cutoffs are revised each year in order to control admissions to the 150-Hour Program in Accountancy at a maximum of 120 students, the limit that can be served with current authorized faculty staffing and still maintain program quality and meet accreditation standards. Students meeting the minimum requirements are selected for admission based on their overall cumulative GPA and secondarily on their ranking on average GPA for the set of pre-accountancy courses until the enrollment limit for that year is reached.  Admission is very competetive; in recent years an overall cumulative GPA of well above a 3.0 was necessary to be admitted to the 150-Hour Program.

Students admitted to the 150-Hour Program must maintain a cumulative UM grade point average of 3.0 or higher for coursework completed subsequent to admission to the 150-hour program to be considered in good standing in the program. If a student's cumulative UM grade point average subsequent to admission falls below the 3.0 minimum, the student is placed on probation and given one semester to return to good standing. In unusual cases, the Director of the 150-Hour Program may grant one additional probationary semester. A student who fails to return to good standing is subject to dismissal from the program. In unusual cases, the Director of the 150-Hour Program may make exceptions.

Graduate Level

Students who successfully complete the undergraduate portion (first four years or 120 hours) of the 150-hour professional accountancy curriculum and maintain a cumulative UM grade point average of 3.0 or higher since admission to the program are admitted to the Graduate School and the graduate (master's) portion of the 150-Hour Program. A "Transfer of Division" form must be completed and approved by the Director of the 150-Hour Accountancy Program. Once admitted to the Graduate School, students must maintain a 3.0 cumulative graduate GPA in all courses taken. Upon successful completion of the fifth year or graduate portion of the program, students are awarded both the BSAcc and MAcc degrees.
