Telephone
Telephone interviews are often used to decide on a candidate’s fit with an organization before an invitation for an on-site interview is extended.
Here are some tips to help you prepare for a telephone interview:
- Be prepared for the possibility that the interviewer could call at any time. If you are not in an environment that is suitable for professional, uninterrupted conversation, then let the call go to voicemail and return it promptly.
- Ensure that your outgoing voicemail is brief and professional – always be prepared to make a good impression.
- If you share a telephone with other people, make them aware that you are expecting a professional phone call. Instruct them to answer the phone in a professional manner, and be sure to collect your messages.
- Keep a copy of your resume and cover letter with you at all times. Having this available makes it easier to recall some of your past experiences.
- Be prepared to talk about your past experience and educational background. Provide examples of your achievements where possible.
- Capture the interviewer’s name and contact information.
- Follow-up with a thank you note.
