Preparation

  1. To prepare for interviewing, attend multiple workshops on resume writing and interviewing. Many workshops are presented by corporate recruiters, who provide an inside edge for those students who attend. Visit our homepage for a complete listing of dates, times and locations.
  2. Arrive at the interview early! Wait in waiting room area 104 Cornell Hall for the recruiter.
  3. Be aware of the importance of a good first impression. The first five minutes are critical. Your appearance should reflect professional dress and grooming. You should smile and show enthusiasm for the interview. Maintain good eye contact and give a firm handshake. Exit the interview with the same mannerisms.
  4. Upon entering the interview room or office, take the lead from the interviewer. The interviewer may want to start with a little bit of small talk to get the ball rolling.
  5. Carry an attractive portfolio (cordovan, black or brown leather) and include extra copies of your resume, references and transcript.
  6. Listen carefully to the questions being asked and answer them completely! Be careful not to ramble.
  7. Memorize a few key selling points you want to present in the interview. Be prepared for the appropriate time to communicate these.
  8. Select and be prepared to describe situations and events that you have dealt with effectively, in case the interview is structured as a behavioral interview.
  9. Memorize at least 3-5 well-stated questions that you will ask the interviewer about the job or the organization.
  10. Avoid discussing salary, vacation or benefits in the first interview. This topic may come up in a second interview or in subsequent meetings.
