Mizzou Business Online - February 2007

Greeting from Dean Bruce Walker

Welcome to the February 2007 issue of Mizzou Business Online. This issue highlights some of the important ways through which alumni stay involved with the MU College of Business. Many MU graduates come back to campus and give their time, expertise, and financial support. (Of course, it doesn’t take a personal trip to Cornell Hall to make a gift to the college; you can do that by mail or online!)

Alumni involvement is integral to our college being a truly high-caliber business school. Specifically, the generous financial support of our alumni and friends allows us to develop programs benefiting our students, recruit top-caliber faculty, and continue to enhance the world-class facility we have in Cornell Hall.

Videos Provide an Inside Look at Educational Activities

As a recipient of the 2005-06 Maxine A. Jagels and Lee Lewis Wharton Scholarship in the School of Accountancy, Theresa Chiu personally knows the impact that alumni can have at the MU College of Business. So she was excited to participate in a new project for the college that was part of The Herbert J. Davenport Society's annual banquet. Theresa had a “starring role” in one of five video vignettes the college produced for the October 2006 banquet, which celebrates private support of the college.

“Alumni give back with donations and with their time,” says Chiu, who was in the video and also introduced a vignette about student services at the banquet. “This was a fun way for me to do my part for the college, too.” The other vignettes covered MBA consulting projects, professional development of students, the Vasey Academy, and scholarly research.

Visiting Executives Share Insights with Students

Who would have thought some advice one of the most prominent CEOs in the nation might give to an auditorium full of eager listeners would be to reward employees for good work with rubber chickens and oversized chili peppers? That’s what students heard from David Novak, CEO of Yum! Brands, Inc., when he visited the college to present a Dean’s Distinguished Lecture last October. Bush Auditorium was filled with students, faculty, alumni, and community members to hear the 2006 Homecoming Grand Marshal deliver his address “Building Dynasty Performance.” Novak’s lecture focused heavily on “catching employees doing something right” and recognizing them for it.

Ralph Clark Receives Highest Honor from Alumni Association

The Mizzou Alumni Association presented Ralph Clark with the 51st Annual Distinguished Service Award on October 27. The award is the highest honor the association presents to an alumnus or alumna of MU.

The Distinguished Service Award recognizes outstanding service by an individual whose sustained efforts and support have added to the excellence of MU. A long-time member of the College of Business Strategic Development Board, Clark received the award for his many contributions to his alma mater, particularly his passionate dedication to expanding technology on the MU campus.
