2006 Davenport Society Banquet

A near-record number of 33 new members were welcomed into the College of Business’ Herbert J. Davenport Society, on Friday, October 20 in Reynolds Alumni Center.  Seventeen advancing members were also honored at the 2006 annual banquet.

Dean Bruce Walker opened the banquet with his remarks, stating that he believes the college’s “people and programs” are stronger now than ever.  He went onto list several examples of events and programs that prepare MU students to be leaders in accounting and business, while also thanking those in attendance for contributing in a variety of ways to the college’s educational endeavors.

Chancellor Deaton congratulated the college on its success with the For All We Call Mizzou campaign and introduced the 2006 chair of the Davenport Society, Jeffrey Smith (BS BA ’72).  Since he was in Cairo, Egypt on business on the evening of the banquet, Smith pre-recorded his comments.  He praised increased business opportunities in Missouri and acknowledged the college’s and University’s role in that growth.

Following Smith, the highlight of night began as new members were introduced by College of Business undergraduate, Accountancy, and MBA students while Dean Walker and MU Chancellor Brady Deaton presented each with a Davenport Society medallion.

Tom O’Neal, the college’s executive director of advancement, explained that the 33 new members qualified for membership into the Society by making a gift or pledge of at least $25,000 in support of the college.  Mike Haggas, director of development, also recognized the generosity of advancing members in the Society.  Gifts from more than 380 Davenport Society members now total over $100 million.

The evening also featured a special showing of five video vignettes focusing on different programs within the college.  The topics included: the MBA consulting projects, the Vasey Academy, scholarly research, student services, and professional development.

As is tradition at the Davenport banquet, the celebration concluded with the energetic music of Mini Mizzou.

“The Davenport Society Banquet was a memorable occasion. My wife and I enjoyed meeting other alumni and supporters of the college,” says Sam Hamacher (BS BA  '74), a member of the college's Strategic Development Board. “The most special part was when our daughter Kim, who is a student in the college, introduced us as new members of the Society at the banquet.”
