GREAT NEW OPPORTUNITIES FROM THE COLLEGE OF BUSINESS!!

Spring Semester 2008 is around the corner and so are a lot of great new classes! Please see below for details on these wonderful opportunities: Managing and Developing Websites, Consulting in Healthcare Information Technology, and Job Search Strategies!

Learn How to Develop and Manage Web Sites!

In Management 4620: Web Development Fundamentals during the Spring 2008 semester. This course provides an introduction to website design, technology, and management. The course consists largely of hands-on work in the Cornell computer lab, where students learn how to design, create, and publish content on the web using a number of standard protocols and file formats (HTML, XHTML, CSS).

Students will learn how to generate raw HTML code as well as use Macromedia Dreamweaver to create websites. Students will also lean how to use Macromedia Fireworks and Flash to add graphics and animation to their websites.

Integration with databases and other user interactions will be covered. In addition, tools and techniques for developing and maintain websites and web based businesses, such as dynamically generated websites and content management systems will be explored.

Grading is based on short assignments, quizzes, and a final project in which students write, design, and build a large multi-page website on a topic of their choosing – bringing together the design and technical skills they have acquired throughout the semester. Students may elect to take MGMT 4620 with a service learning option (see below for more details).

The class schedule will be Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30-4:45 pm. The instructor is J. Scott Christianson (christiansonjs@missouri.edu or 573-424-4254). For a copy of the syllabus, or for more information please contact J. Scott Christianson or visit web.missouri.edu/~christiansonj.

About Service Learning

Service-learning combines academic classroom curriculum with meaningful community service. Starting in the spring of 2008, students who take MGMT 4620 will have the option of turning their required final project into a service-learning project. The MU Office of Service-Learning will match student who select this option with organizations who are in need of a website or major re-design of their existing website. This gives students a great opportunity to help a not-for-profit organization while working on a website that will be deployed and used on a regular basis. Benefits to students include:

·          Transcript designation as a service learning course

·          A real-world project that can be incorporated into the student’s portfolio or resume

·          Experience designing and creating a functional website for an organization
