Awards and Honors Given to Faculty and Staff

Three College of Business faculty and staff members – Jere Francis, KPMG Distinguished Research Professor of Accountancy; David West, professor of finance; and Phyllis Moore, senior academic advisor – received significant honors in September.

“These awards are further evidence of how skilled and dedicated the college’s faculty and staff members are.  I am so pleased that Jere, David, and Phyllis have received much deserved recognition,” said Dean Bruce Walker.

A Curators’ Professorship is the highest academic honor the University of Missouri bestows on a faculty member.  The honor is awarded to the University of Missouri System’s most successful and prominent scholars, as identified by their departments, campuses, and worldwide peers.  Only 34 MU faculty members have been elevated to the level of Curators’ Professor.  Francis is the first MU College of Business faculty member to be so designated and only the third business or accounting faculty member across the four UM campuses to earn this distinction.

“It’s a wonderful award, and very gratifying to be recognized by MU for 25 years of hard work, dedication, and commitment to teaching, research, and scholarship,” said Francis.

Francis rejoined the college’s faculty in 1994 after eight years at the University of Iowa.  His areas of research expertise are the role of auditing in corporate governance and the production of credible accounting information for financial markets.  He serves as the coordinator of doctoral studies for the School of Accountancy.

The CTMT Faculty Scholar position was established to recognize an outstanding finance faculty member.  Colliers Turley Martin Tucker (CTMT), a commercial real estate firm, and a number of the firm’s partners provided the funding for this new named position within the College of Business.

“At CTMT, we recognize the value of the exceptional business education that Mizzou provides.  We make a point of recruiting MU College of Business students and staying involved at the university,” said Mark Burkhart, BS BA '76, CTMT president and CEO.

Upon the recommendation of a faculty committee, Dean Bruce Walker offered the new named position to Dr. David A. West, professor of finance.  In accepting the position, West stated, “I feel truly honored to be selected as the inaugural CTMT Scholar in Finance.  MU is indeed fortunate to have such dedicated alumni and corporate benefactors as CTMT.”

West has taught and conducted research in the College of Business since 1966.  His interests include real estate, investments, and health-care finance.  He has instructed more than 11,000 students, and has published three books and 50 research articles.  He holds a joint appointment in the School of Medicine’s Department of Health Management and Informatics, and has served as chair of the Department of Finance and the department’s director of doctoral studies.

One of the nation’s largest full-service commercial real estate firms, Colliers Turley Martin Tucker (CTMT) handles more than $2.5 billion in annual real estate transactions and manages over 110 million square feet of industrial, office, and retail space.  CTMT has 1,000 associates including more than 400 licensed real estate professionals throughout its regional offices in Cincinnati, Dayton, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Nashville and St. Louis.

The Outstanding Advisor Award from the Missouri Academic Advising Association (MACADA) is given annually to one individual who has demonstrated the qualities and practices of an outstanding academic advisor.  This year’s recipient is Phyllis Moore, who advises undergraduate accounting students in the College of Business.

“I was totally surprised but very honored to be selected and recognized for this state-level award. I find advising extremely rewarding and feel most fortunate to have the opportunity to work with such outstanding students,” Moore said.

Moore has been with MU for nearly 14 years, at the college for 10 years, and in advising for 8 years. Besides advising all undergraduate accountancy students, she directs the college’s Student Ambassadors program.
